Client Questions

Most frequently asked questions by our clients

What's the difference between real wood blinds and faux wood blinds?

Real wood blinds are made from premium hardwood, typically basswood, and offer a natural warmth, lighter weight, and a wider range of stain finishes.

Faux wood blinds are made from PVC or composite materials and are more durable in humid environments, making them ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms where real wood can warp over time. Visually, modern faux wood is nearly indistinguishable from real wood, but the materials behave differently.

We bring samples of both to your consultation so you can decide based on your home's specific rooms.

No, wood blinds remain one of the most enduring window treatment choices because they bridge traditional and contemporary interiors. What has shifted is how they're specified: wider slats (2.5"–3"), cleaner mounting hardware, and concealed cord systems like Norman's SmartPrivacy give wood blinds a much more refined, current look than the narrow-slat blinds many homeowners remember from prior decades.

SmartPrivacy is a patented Norman USA innovation that hides the small route holes typically drilled through each slat for the tilt cord. The result is significantly better privacy when slats are closed, and a cleaner, more finished aesthetic. We specify SmartPrivacy on most of our wood and faux wood blind orders because the upgrade is minor in cost and substantial in visual refinement.

Yes. Both real wood and faux wood blinds can be ordered with motorized tilt, motorized lift, or both. Motorization is especially valuable for tall windows, wide banks of windows, and rooms where light changes throughout the day. As with our shades, motorization programming and smart-home app setup are included in the service.

Yes, provided you specify cordless or motorized operation, which we recommend by default for any home with children or pets. Cord loops are the primary hazard with traditional blinds. All our partner manufacturers offer cordless lift systems, and Norman USA's blinds are WCMA "Best for Kids" certified, an industry safety standard.

Custom real wood blinds typically start around $250–$500 per window, depending on slat width, finish, and size. Faux wood blinds generally run 30–40% less than real wood for comparable sizing. Motorization adds $150–$350 per blind. As with all our products, consultation, measurement, and installation are included in the price — no separate service fees. Exact pricing comes at your free consultation.
